On July 27, 1944, in Lyon, the Germans executed five French Resistance fighters, including Albert Chambonnet, in retaliation for an attack on a restaurant popular with Germans. Chambonnet, a military officer and Resistance leader, was posthumously honored with a memorial in Bellecour and an air base named after him. He is buried in Cerdon alongside his comrades. His journey from a miner's son to a Resistance leader is documented through his military service and political involvement during World War II.
